CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

“Oh, I thought I had more than this,” Goonara said when Sadira handed her the only sample of the elusive compound they possessed.

“You didn’t know how much you had in there?” she asked. “We just risked life and limb for it.”

“I have over three hundred projects in varying stages of research.

It was an easy mistake.”

Sadira bit her tongue and took a breath. She needed Goonara to bring her A game, and if she was feeling at all insecure or self-conscious, her performance might suffer. It was something they simply didn’t have time for.

“It’s no big deal,” the captain said as casually as she could with an uncharacteristically laissez-faire attitude. “The important thing is you have it now, and you and Holly can get moving on formulating a cure.”

“Potential cure,” Greater Holly corrected.

“Yes, of course.”

“I wouldn’t want to get hopes up and cause any unrealistic expectations,” the AI said.

“Right. No worries, Hol. You just do the best you can.”

“It will take a bit of work, I’m afraid. We must run quite a few tests to confirm the formula will even work. And we do not have much of the requisite compound.”

“I get it, it’ll be tough,” Sadira said. “But I’ve got faith in you. Both of you, so just do your thing.”

“Can I be of assistance in any way?” a quiet voice asked from across the med lab.

Artemesia had been napping in the nearby med pod, the system gently flooding her system with high concentrations of oxygen to give her cells as much of a boost as they could. While they were unable to actually reverse the damage her body modifications were causing, they could at least give her every bit of help short of outright mod removal that they could.

“Hey, that’s great of you to offer,” Sadira said. “We’re going to go prep the cargo bay, but I’m sure Holly and Goonara could use some help.”

“We have this under control,” Goonara said.

“Except it would be great to have the extra hands, right?”

Even a blind man could read the writing on that wall, and Goonara was far from blind. “Uh, yes. I mean, we could always use the assistance. Thank you for your kind offer,” she replied.

Artie was no dummy, and she gave Sadira a look stating as much. The captain just flashed a wink and went off to help the others get their trap ready.

“Well, it looks like we have everything we need,” Holly’s male half said.

“Indeed,” his other aspect replied. “So, let us begin, shall we?”

The basic formulation was already complete, or so Holly and Goonara hoped. While waiting for the arrival of the final ingredient,

they had worked on making a mixture of the base components. All that they needed was that last element. And now they had it.

Goonara followed the plan she and Holly had discussed, mixing the test formula with the determined quantity and ensuring a properly synthesized blend was stabilized and ready for testing.

“This should do it,” Goonara said as she administered a drop to their sample of Moose’s blood with a pipette.
